What is a Trial Balance?

The trial balance is a list of all the ledger accounts and their balances – either debit or credit.

The double entry system ensures that debits and credits are equal for each journal.

If all the journals are entered correctly, the total of debits will equal the total of credits in the trial balance.

This infographic shows the steps in the accounting process.
